Is that a Zucchini in your pocket...?

3 lbs!

...Or are you just happy to see me??

Look at what I found in my little garden yesterday:

3 lb Clarimore Light Green Zucchini, aka, "Big Boy"

A beautiful but very sneaky light green Clarimore zucchini hid quietly amongst the big squash leaves and the now crispy green bean foliage to surprise me yesterday. I actually shrieked with delight when I spied him hiding there right in front of me.

These light green zukes are usually sweeter and more tender than the dark green ones, so this will make a couple of batches of very nice zucchini soup or perhaps I will bake this one in the oven since our evenings are becoming cooler now.

So far my little garden has produced 46 lbs of squash this season. 19 lbs of that was this light green variety. I have really enjoyed being creative and using the zucchini to make all kinds of meals, appetizers and desserts. More and more I am realizing that I need my creative outlets to soothe my soul and keep me somewhat sane. This blog is one of those cherished creative outlets of mine. I love writing, and I definitely enjoy the friends I have made through blogging. Thank you all who read my blog, both the known commenters and the "lurkers".

Now to go be creative with this sneaky Big Boy....

I'm so glad to hear the nights are cooling down since we'll be heading home to Coarsegold in a few weeks.

The Clarimore zucchini is awesome, how sneaky of her, oops—I mean "him"—to hide out among the leaves. And 46 pounds of squash is something to write home about! That's great...hmmmmm, zucchini bread, zucchini lasagna, I love. I've never made zucchini soup, but it sounds delicious, thanks for the idea!

I love your scale...I need one of those...you know me and my need to weigh things! And that little postal scale we've got isn't going to cut it for much longer.

Adding "clarimore zucchini" to my "things to plant next year" list. It sounds delicious.
Have you posted your zucchini soup recipe yet? I'd love to have it.

Zucchines can be very. very stealthy, sneaking up on you without your knowledge, growing several inches a day.

My Mom really enjoyed the last light green zucchini you gifted her with, "it simply melted deliciously in my mouth", as I recall her comment.

Amazing production rate for your little garden, it is finally rewarding you for all of your loving care.

You have such a beautiful, joyful and earthy blog, Farmer Jen. I always enjoy stopping in to see what you've been up to. :)

Do you know I haven't had anything created with zucchini since I was a child.
And just the thought of baked zucchini, zucchini soup and bread sounds so comforting and healthy.

Do you know what the health benefits of zucchini are?
I bet they are one of the healthier veggies.

That would make you one super healthy gal :)

HI CA Grammy,
It's still warm during the day, but the nights are a bit cooler and there is a breeze at night. Yup, 46 pounds of squash is a lot. Each year I have one veggie that tries to out perform all the others. This year it is squash!

Hi Danni,
I love my hanging scale too! I ordered it from Hardware Bob's hardware store catalog several years ago after researching many models online. I like that it will weigh up to 60lbs of produce at one time (I am an optimistic gardener!), and I love the shape of the basket/scoop.

Clarimore is my favorite zuke. I will think about posting the soup recipe. It's really not my own, but I guess I can just give credit to the author when I post it, right?

Hi Bob,
Yes, my zucchinis outdid themselves this year. There is always one veggie each year that excels in production. I think my garden occupants have a competition going on with each other from year to year. Several years ago that same small garden produced 96 pounds of delicious quality Roma tomatoes! I yearn for that kind of production again. This year it was the zukes turn, I guess.

Hi Lisa,
I think zuccinis are healthy and also versatile in recipes. I mean, you can make soup, saute or a cake with them. What other veggie other than the squashes can do that? I am not up to speed on the health benefits of zukes, but I do know that they probably have a lot of vitamin A, fiber and probably a fair amount of starch in them. They are low in calories of course, that is until you saute them in olive oil or put them in a cake!
